Why You Should Use Snapchat Geofilters

Why You Should Use Snapchat Geofilters

Snapchat has become one of the most popular social networks. There are roughly 10 billion video views per day and users snap 9,000 times per second. Moreover, 85% of Snapchat users are within the ages of 13 and 34. If you’re product/service is gauged towards this age group, you should take advantage of Snapchat.

How can you use the platform?

Although you should post as your business (read this to learn how), you can also take advantage of Snapchat’s paid offerings. One ad product that is very inexpensive and has high potential is the use of Geofilters!

What is a Geofilter?

Geofilters are a way for brands, creatives, designers and individuals to create a design that can be used as an overlay for snaps. This custom overlay is determined by the user’s location. This means that you can create a geofilter around a city, town, park, concert or even a place of business. See examples below from brands such as GE, Apple and Reebok.

Snapchat allows users to submit two types of Geofilters for the platform: Community and On-Demand. Community is designed to allow users to create a filter that can be used at a local landmark, public location, city or university. Community  Geofilters are not allowed to have any brand logos. The On-Demand geofilters are for events, businesses or brands to be able to create and target a specific location. The On-Demand Geofilters are paid and are allowed to have brand logos and trademarks.

How to create a Geofilter?

First you want to visit: https://www.snapchat.com/on-demand.  Here you can create a design online or submit a design that you have created for your Geofilter. Although you can create Geofilters yourself, there are many tools and companies that you can utilize to create more creative filters that will increase engagement and use. It is important to remember that you have to meet Snapchat’s guidelines and wait for these designs to be approved.

Next you will have the option to pick a time and geofence for your Geofilter. It is important to remember that these two factors determine the cost. Let’s explain this with an example. Both examples below will have a fixed time of 24hours during the middle of the week.

The first example below is a Geofilter that is created for the entire New Haven, CT Green.

This would allow you to have the Geofilter accessible throughout this 792,367 Sq Ft area for 24 hours at the cost of $288.88. This is something that would be hugely valuable if you were holding an event on the New Haven Green. Even if you are just a booth at an event, you can create a Geofilter to help attract users to your booth.

In this second example a Geofilter is created for a smaller area- a museum in New Haven, CT.

In this example you can see that the cost is much lower by comparison. Here you receive the Geofilter for the entire building, 24,388 Sq Ft for 24 hours at a cost of $7.62. This is a great option for a restaurant or small business. You can easily increase your brand awareness by users snapping with your Geofilter. All at a cost of $7.62 a day!

Geofilters are a great way to increase engagement and brand awareness for users in the 13-35 age group. If you think your business could benefit from utilizing Snapchat Geofilters, contact us to see how we can help.
